A sheet cake is a single layer by
itself. A layer cake is two sheet cakes of the same size one on
top of the other with icing/filling between layers. A tiered
sheet cake is more than one sheet cake of different sizes on top
of each other with icing/filling between layers. A tiered layer
cake is more than one layer cake of different sizes on top of
each other.

A 3-D cake is one that is simply 3-D. A cut-out
shape cake is a sheet cake that is cut in the shape of your design, but not
3-D.
